Streaking Blake sweeps RM in doubleheader
by Dan Greenberg | Staff Writer

Conventional wisdom says the Blake boys basketball team is too young. Its 9-0 record says it's not.

The Bengals, led by sophomores Matt McGugan, Ryan Frazier and Brandon Headley, stayed undefeated for the winter with a 45-41 victory over Richard Montgomery Monday. McGugan and Frazier, the Bengals' (9-0, 2-0 Montgomery 4A East) two leading scorers through nine games, again led the way with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

McGugan did most of his damage early, scoring 12 in the opening half, including two layups and a baseline jumper to propel Blake to an early 12-2 lead.

Frazier did his damage when his team needed it most. He scored 10 of his points in the second stanza, including two of the game's biggest. After Rockets guard Nick Brown nabbed a steal and followed his own miss to cut the lead to one, Frazier was fouled with 25.5 seconds to go, and sank both free throws. After Brown missed a tough layup, Headley sealed the deal with a free throw of his own, netting the game's final margin.

"Me, Ryan Frazier, Brandon Headley, we're all sophomores, a lot of the team is juniors and most of the seniors didn't play much last year," said McGugan. "We're a young team, but I don't feel young. All the fall leagues, summer leagues, we feel like we already have the experience."
